What Actually Happens During a Pottery Painting Session?

The unknown can be nerve-wracking. If you're considering your first pottery painting session but feel anxious about what to expect, this guide is for you. We'll walk through exactly what happens from the moment you arrive to when you collect your finished masterpiece—no surprises, no uncertainty.

Before You Arrive

No preparation needed. Seriously. You don't need artistic experience, special clothing, or supplies. Everything is provided at the studio. Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a bit of paint on—though our glazes wash out easily from most fabrics.

Booking: Small groups (1–5 people) can simply walk in during our opening hours. For groups of six or more, we recommend booking ahead to guarantee space. Private events and celebrations should definitely be booked in advance.

Arrival and Welcome (5–10 minutes)

When you walk into The Pottery Lounge, you'll be greeted by our team. We'll explain the pricing structure ($80 and you get to pick any piece to paint)

You'll see shelves filled with unpainted pottery pieces—mugs, plates, bowls, figurines, vases, and seasonal items. Everything is priced individually, r

Take your time browsing. There's no rush to decide, and our team can answer questions about which pieces work best for beginners.

Selecting Your Colours (5–10 minutes)

Once you've chosen your pottery piece, it's time to select underglazes. This is where first-timers often feel uncertain, so let's clarify how ceramic glazes work:

• Wet glaze looks different from finished glaze. The colours in the bottles appear darker or lighter and more muted than the final result.
• Glazes transform during firing. That dull green becomes vibrant emerald. That greyish blue turns brilliant cobalt.
• We have colour swatches showing fired results. These help you visualise the finished look.
• Mixing colours is possible. All glazes mix or layer really well.

Our team will explain the colour transformation and help you select a palette. Many beginners choose 3–4 colours maximum for their first piece.

The Painting Process (60–90 minutes)

Here's where time becomes wonderfully elastic. Most guests spend 1–1.5 hours actually painting, though there's no time limit during standard sessions.

Setting Up Your Workspace

You'll receive your pottery piece, brushes in various sizes, a water cup, paper towels, and your selected glaze colours in small pottles. We also provide pencils (pencil will 100% dissapear in the kiln) for sketching designs lightly on the bisque ware before painting.

Techniques and Tips

Our team demonstrates proper brushing technique: three thin coats rather than one thick one. Thick glaze drips, pools, and creates uneven results. Thin coats build rich, even colour.

We also show you how to use our design tools:

• Stamps for repeating patterns
• Stencils for lettering and shapes
• Tape for clean lines and geometric designs
• Sponges for textured effects

Common Beginner Approaches

The Planner: Sketch your design first with pencil, then paint carefully within your guidelines. Good for complex patterns and lettering.

The Improviser: Start painting and let the design evolve. Many guests find this freeing and discover unexpected creative instincts.

The Pattern Follower: Use stamps and stencils exclusively for a cohesive, professional look without freehand pressure.

The Minimalist: Solid colours with simple accents. Elegant, timeless, and genuinely difficult to mess up.

Whichever approach you choose, remember: our team circulates regularly to offer guidance, troubleshoot problems, and celebrate your progress.

Finishing Up (5–10 minutes)

When you're satisfied with your design, let us know. We'll:

Fill out our online contact form - this will allow us to email you when its ready.

The Firing Process (Behind the Scenes)

After you leave, your piece goes through a transformation you won't witness but can definitely appreciate:

Dipping: We apply clear glaze over your coloured design. This seals everything and creates the glossy, waterproof surface.

Kiln Loading: Your piece joins others in our electric kiln.

Firing: The kiln heats to over 1,000°C (1,832°F). This takes approximately 8 hours, plus cooling time.

Cooling: The kiln must cool slowly to prevent thermal shock.

Unloading and Inspection: We carefully remove fired pieces and check for any issues.

Notification: We text or email when your piece is ready for collection.

Collection Day

All pieces are ready the next day. When you collect your pottery, that moment of reveal—seeing your creation transformed into a glossy, permanent, functional piece—is genuinely special. Many guests are surprised by how professional their work looks after firing.

Your finished piece is:

• Food-safe: Eat and drink from it with confidence
• Dishwasher-safe: Clean it in your dishwasher (though hand washing preserves the finish longer)
• Microwave-safe: Heat beverages without worry
• Permanent: With proper care, your piece lasts decades

What to Bring

Honestly? Just yourself. We provide:

• All pottery pieces
• All glazes and paints
• Brushes and tools
• Aprons (though we recommend wearing casual clothes)
• Design inspiration and guidance

You might want to bring:

• Design ideas: Photos on your phone for reference
• Reading glasses: If you need them for detail work
• Patience: Good pottery painting shouldn't be rushed

FAQs for the Detail-Oriented

How long does the whole experience take?

Plan for 1.5–2 hours from arrival to departure. Some guests finish faster; others linger longer. There's no time pressure.

Can I bring food and drinks?

Absolutely! Many guests bring coffee, wine, or snacks. We have a relaxed BYO policy. Just keep drinks away from your painting area to avoid spills.

What if I hate how it looks halfway through?

Underglaze wipes off completely with a damp cloth. Even partially dried glaze can be removed. We can help you start fresh if needed.

Can I fix mistakes after the piece is fired?

Unfortunately, no. Firing is permanent. But here's the thing: "mistakes" often become favourite features. The handmade quality is part of the charm.

Is it actually relaxing, or will I be stressed?

Nearly every first-timer tells us how surprisingly meditative the experience is. There's something about focusing on a creative task that quiets the mind.

Ready to Experience It Yourself?

Now that you know exactly what to expect, those pre-session nerves should be gone. Book your session or simply walk in during our opening hours. We can't wait to guide you through your first pottery painting experience.
