Abbots Clear Crackle is a clear, glossy midfire glaze with a reactive surface. Its brushable format is useful for localised glaze touch-ups as well as full coverage, particularly where dipping is impractical.

Colour & firing notes
The supplier describes use for patches on fired or unfired glazed ware. Test repairs separately: a second firing can change the original glaze and clay. If adjusting consistency, the supplier specifies 1.3–1.4 kg per litre, rather than a standard dilution recipe.
How to apply
- Stir the brushable glaze thoroughly, then follow the jar directions for application. Let each coat dry before adding another.
- When layering, test the combined thickness rather than applying two full coatings automatically. Protect the shelf when testing fluid glazes.
- Abbots develops its midfire colours around cone 5–6 heatwork. Use witness cones to check maturity; copying a controller temperature alone will not reproduce another kiln.
Food-contact suitability
This is a crackle-effect glaze. The supplier describes it as food safe in Abbots’ opinion, but that is not an independent test of your finished ware. For food-contact work, assess glaze fit, cleanability and the completed clay/glaze combination.
Before glazing a full piece
Fire a test tile on your chosen clay before glazing a full piece. Record the coats, firing cone and cooling programme. Photographs show example fired results; clay colour, kiln atmosphere and application can change the appearance.
