CR-1 Black is a glossy black crawl glaze that separates into raised beads and irregular shapes during firing. Thinner applications give finer beading; heavier applications produce larger areas and more cracking.

Colour & firing notes

Apply 1–4 even coats to cone 04 bisque, letting each dry almost completely before substantial cracks form. Handle the dry surface gently. Fire to cone 5–6.

How to apply

  • Apply with care because the dried coating can crack before firing. More coats create larger beads and more cracking.
  • A layer over Amaco Celadon or underglaze can help pre-firing durability. Test the complete layered surface, not only the crawl glaze alone.

Food-contact suitability

Amaco’s food-safe statement is conditional on layering over its Celadon glazes. It is not a blanket claim for Black Crawl on bare clay or other glazes; assess the finished surface and current instructions for the exact combination.

Before glazing a full piece

Fire a test tile on your chosen clay before glazing a full piece. Record the coats, firing cone and cooling programme. Photographs show example fired results; clay colour, kiln atmosphere and application can change the appearance.
