Colour & firing notes

Amaco's sample images use Dark Chocolate clay at cone 5. A test tile will show how the glaze behaves on your clay body.

How to apply

  • Apply 3–4 heavy brush coats and let each dry thoroughly. Multiple coats are preferable to one thick layer; drying takes longer as the coating builds.
  • Thickness affects the crackle pattern: thinner coverage gives tighter cracks, while thicker coverage can make a larger network. Brown or buff clay without manganese is the supplier’s preferred starting point.

Food-contact suitability

The crackle surface is not recommended for food contact because of durability. Use a suitable liner glaze for food-contact areas and keep Kiln Ice away from drinking rims.

Before glazing a full piece

Fire a test tile on your chosen clay before glazing a full piece. Record the coats, firing cone and cooling programme. Photographs show example fired results; clay colour, kiln atmosphere and application can change the appearance.
