SW-440 White Bead forms raised beads of different sizes rather than a flat glaze coating. At cone 6 oxidation the dimensional surface is retained; cone 10 reduction softens and spreads the beads.

Colour & firing notes

Not recommended for dinnerware surfaces; keep exterior use below the lip. Apply over cone 04 fired underglaze or engobe to retain texture. Combining it with a glaze can flatten the beads.

How to apply

  • Allow a layer to lose its wet gloss before adding the next, and alternate the direction of brush coats. Extra coats create a more pronounced bead pattern.
  • When using over underglaze or engobe, Mayco recommends bisque firing that layer to cone 04 first to improve adhesion.

Food-contact suitability

Use for decorative surfaces rather than food-contact or drinking-rim areas. Texture or surface durability makes this a poor choice for those areas; choose a suitable liner glaze for functional ware.

Before glazing a full piece

Fire a test tile on your chosen clay before glazing a full piece. Record the coats, firing cone and cooling programme. Photographs show example fired results; clay colour, kiln atmosphere and application can change the appearance.
